Air Compressor Types

Electric/Diaphragm type compressors are oil less and are the more inexpensive type and can be somewhat noisy. These are usually a good choice for around the home and garage where they get light use. They usually run on 110v household current and require very little maintenance.

Electric/Piston type are generally larger and have more flow capacity. These are good for paint spraying and running air tools in the garage. They are available in 110v and 220v models and are a good choice if you plan on using them a lot. They do require a little more maintenance but are very reliable and will last for many years.

Electric/Piston 2 Stage are usually 220v and are for shop use where there are many tools being used simultaneously. The average homeowner wont have this in his garage.

Gasoline powered generally more expensive and are great for use on a construction site where there may not be electricity available
The compressor is usually the piston type and used outside where there is plenty of ventilation.
